For my birthday, we got New Super Mario Brothers for the Wii. You just can’t go wrong with Mario and we’ve been having a lot of fun playing this new version of the old classic. The multi-player aspect of the game makes a wonderful addition to classic Mario fun.
Our four-year-old is such a hardcore gamer. She loves Mario and has really improved her skills. She can play for hours like her Daddy and is determined to win. When she starts to get frustrated, that is the signal that play time is over.
While it’s fun to play multi-player, it really shows how hard it can be to cooperatively play games. A lot of times we kill each other unintentionally. Even though it’s a ton of fun to play together, I can’t wait to play alone since it’s just easier to explore the worlds that way.
It is fun to play as a family. We all love Mario and it’s so great to bond over saving the Princess again.

Finally the PlayStation 3 has come down in price to something somewhat affordable. The 120 GB PS3 is now $299. As a casual gamer, there are only a few games that are PS3 exclusives that pique my interest. But they interest me enough to really want a PS3. Now it looks like I can start saving my pennies(and nickels, dimes, quarters, $5s, and $20s) for a PS3. Our goal is to have one by Christmas.

Available today is the Rock Band Country Pack that retails for $29.99. It features 13 new songs to the game and has a total of 21 songs from artists like Alan Jackson and Kenny Rogers.
I’m not sure how well country songs are suite for rock band although some country has more rock roots than it does country.
I will have to take a pass on this one. I do love country but these titles just aren’t my cup of tea.

E3 - the electronic games and entertainment expo - is fast approaching. E3 begins June 2nd. This is the conference where video game developers and publishers showcase their upcoming lineup of games. Here’s a chance for those in the media to get a first look at many games that will soon be available to the general public.
There will be a lot of E3 news that we will be publishing here at Romperz and also at JoeGamer.net. Already companies are releasing what they will be displaying at E3. It will take a few days to sort everything out but hopefully we’ll be the most organized we’ve ever been for E3.

This week’s Ultimate Gamer was the final showdown. The show started with three contestants left - Robert, Mark, and Jamal. One was about to be eliminated. Jamal was eliminated as he had the lowest Halo score of the three remaining players. Jamal admitted that Halo wasn’t his best game. Next Mark and Robert prepared to face off at Samsung Stadium.
They did get to choose one former player to help them prepare for the three games they would be playing - Shawn White Snowboarding, Gears of War, and Soulcalibur 4. Robert chose Swoozie and Mark chose Jamal. Robert figured Swoozie could offer some advice on fighting games while Mark knew Jamal was really good at Soulcalibur.
At Samsung Stadium, the first game was Shawn White Snowboarding. A victory would score 1 point. The player to reach three points wins the game. Mark won the game and scored one point. Up next was Gears of War. The winner would receive 2 points. Robert won that showdown. The final game was Soulcalibur 4 that was worth 3 points.
The first player to win 5 matches would be the Ultimate Gamer. Robert got off to a blazing start and won the first four pretty convincingly. Then Mark came from behind to take the next five matches and won. Mark was crowned the Ultimate Gamer.
Mark was definitely the underdog but showed that he is a very adaptable and capable gamer. Congrats to Mark and all the contestants. I do hope they do this show again.

Big Fish usually has a good deal for Mother’s Day. Last year they gave away Bejeweled. So I’ve been kind of excited to see what they had in store this year.
I got in the mail a gift certificate for the Mt. Everest Hidden Adventures casual game. I bought the game and it’s pretty fun. Not sure my mom would enjoy it for Mother’s Day so may just give it to a friend. So if you are a Big Fish club member, check your mail and don’t dismiss mail from Big Fish. It’s usually something good.

The gamers were thrown a big curveball last night as they were challenged to the Gauntlet. Even more news was that at the end of each leg of the Gauntlet, a gamer would leave the competition. By the end, there would be only two gamers left.
The first game was Project Gotham Racing 4 but with a twist - players had to race upside down. The person who came in last was Chelsea - the PC gamer who has held her own playing Xbox 360 games. Jamal finished first and had actually said that sometimes for a challenge he will play games upside down. Jamal won an advantage for round two. He would get to handicap the gamer of his choice.
The second game in the Gauntlet was Rock Band 2. The twist here was that players had to play both guitar and drums at the same time. Special controllers were brought in that allowed gamers to play the drum part with their feet. Jamal penalized Mark - so he only got to practice through the song ‘Eye of the Tiger’ instead of 2 like the rest of the gamers. In the end it was Amy - the last female standing - who came in last and therefore eliminated. Swoozie came in first.
That left four gamers and the toughest challenge was yet to come. The game was Halo 3. The challenge was to play all night -standing up - on a platform. Swoozie got a five minute frag fest which he was glad to have won since he was the weakest Halo player.
After a few temptations like food and money the 9 hour slayer match ended at 4am. Swoozie came in last -leaving just three players. Robert came in first and secured his spot in the final. Either Mark or Jamal will be eliminated next from their Halo score. Next week is the finale and will begin with the next elimination and then the two finalists will face off at Samsung Stadium.

Today is April 20th or 420. 420 is apparently the time of the day to smoke marijuana, so today those who partake are celebrating 420 day. ‘Attack of the Show,’ G4’s daily ‘news’ show, will have a 420 special. Since G4 is cable channel to appeal to gamers, this only further stigma gamers are pot smokers. But now all gamers are pot smokers. Nor are they slackers or any of the other stereotypes that have been associated with playing video games.
420 doesn’t bother me per say but the whole big deal G4 is making of it sort of does. I dunno. Maybe most of their viewers really get into it. I just don’t get into things that further perpetrate a stereotype especially of a group that I’m a member.

I was with Gamefly last last year but canceled in December. It just seemed I never had time to play video games. Well now that summer is almost here and reruns will be dominate on the boob tube, I restarted my membership. But this time I opted for the 1 game out at a time option instead of 2.
We usually only play one game at a time so having two is really unnecessary. Now I wish the turnaround time was faster as it usually takes about 5 days for me to send back and receive the next game in my queue.
The first game in my queue is Sonic Unleashed. I’ve heard mixed reviews about this. That the classic Sonic aspect of it rocks but the nights part is different. I guess I will find out for myself.
Right now I’m excited to be a part of Gamefly again. I think the one game at a time will be a better, less stress option for right now.

Readers of my blog (all two of you!) know that I love reality TV. So it’s no surprise that the advertisements for Sci Fi’s new series ‘WCG Ultimate Gamer’ really caught my attention. I thought I had missed the premiere but was glad I didn’t. Thank goodness for DVR.
There are twelve gamers who must live together and do battle against each other to become the ultimate gamer. The grand prize includes $100,00 and a chance to compete in the World Cyber Games in China. Since there are twelve, I didn’t catch all of their names because they really seemed to focus on six. It is hard to get to everyone in an hour’s time. There is one player they all seem to think is the one to beat - Robert who has won five gaming championships.
Last night’s game was Rock Band 2. Players first had to do a real life challenge. The contestants were randomly put in a group. Then they had to learn the song ‘New Kid in School’ by the Donnas on real musical instruments. They had to perform the song in from of The Donnas who judged which band did the best job. From there, players were ranked from best to last. Those in the last group stood a good chance of having to face off to stay in the gamer’s loft.
Bands were split and reformed for the next part of the challenge that took part in the isolation chamber. Bands had to play one song and would then be ranked by band for their overall score as well as their individual score. The two scores would then determine who was at the bottom of the leaderboard and would have to do battle on the Samsung Stage.
Robert - the gamer everyone fears - would up at the bottom of the pack while Swoozie came out on top. Swoozie got to pick who would face off with Robert on stage. The loser goes home. Earlier in the show, Robert is talking alliance with Swoozie and Dante saying that whomever sticks with him will make top four.
Swoozie didn’t choose Ciji, the Rock band mistress of the house but instead chose JD - the sports gamer who had barely played Rock Band. Obviously Swoozie isn’t trying to get Robert out of the house which has the house abuzz as to what the heck is Swoozie thinking?!!?
JD practices all night and another loft mate shows him some tricks to Rock Band 2. Robert doesn’t practice at all. During the showdown, Robert outscores JD by at least 60,000 points. The easy-going, fun loving JD is kicked out of the loft.
There are 8 episodes of Ultimate Gamer. There’s a lot of game play involved as well as skill. Should be an interesting show as episode one was entertaining.
