My Kingdom for the Princess

Posted on Sep 16, 2009 under Casual Games | No Comment

My latest casual game obsession has been My Kingdom for the Princess. This week I finally finished the game and completed my castle.

If you finish each level before nightfall, you expand your castle. Some levels it’s harder to achieve this than others. In the game, you begin with one worker who must clear a path through the terrain for the Princess’s carriage. You have three resources - wood, food, and gold. Each task requires either one or two resources. Some levels have buildings that generate resources like sawmills, farms, and mines. Some levels also have warehouses that allow you to keep more resources at one time and adds to the total of resources that you collect. You can also upgrade your homestead to add more workers.

Before beginning each level, you can survey the board to see just what you will need. If you will need a lot of wood in the beginning, then it’s best to build and upgrade your sawmill as soon as possible.

Now that I’ve finished my castle, I may play through the game again just to try to beat my best times on each level. My Kingdom for the Princess reminds me of Settlers of Catan. It is probably because of the resource management aspect of the game. My Kingdom for the Princess was very entertaining and one of those rare games I actually finished. It also has replay value if nothing else to beat your own personal time or that of your friends.

My Kingdom for the Princess was a nice break from my Facebook games and also a game that everyone in the house really enjoyed, too.

The Princess Bride

One of my all-time favorite movies is ‘The Princess Bride,’ so when I saw that there was a casual game of the same name, I knew I had to give it a try. I eagerly downloaded the demo and then proceeded to forget about it totally for at least a week. I recently remembered the gem that I had downloaded and gave it a try.

The game is broken down into five parts - each is a different type of casual game and scene from the movie. Some are more entertaining than others. There’s time management, trivia, and other casual game genres to test your skills.

I’m almost through with my hour demo and now have to decide if it’s worth buying. Casual games are fun at first but as a casual gamer usually lose their appeal shortly thereafter. I guess I’m really judging this game on the time management part where you play Wesley the farm boy and have to do tasks around the farm. During your time you also much complete a task for Buttercup. The first few levels start off super easy but then become increasingly difficult. I usually like time management games but this one just doesn’t really do anything for me.

So, while I do love the movie, the casual game just isn’t one that I find myself enjoying that much. That’s the great thing about casual games is that you can try before you buy. Maybe your experience will be better than mine.

Peggle Nights is Here

Posted on Sep 17, 2008 under Casual Games | No Comment

Popcap releases the much anticipated - well at least in our household - Peggle Nights. This sequel to Peggle was slated for a summer release and with only a few days to spare made it.

First impressions? Love it! Fans of Peggle will love that this sequel stays true to Peggle. Some sequels seems to go in a different direction.

I’ve only played for about 10 minutes but really am enjoying it. So far it’s only available for the PC.

The Princess Bride Game

Being a huge fan of The Princess Bride, I was thrilled to see that there is now a casual game.

It appears to be a hidden object game but also has cut scenes from the movie. Plus the voice work features the original actors. The only problem is it’s a huge download, so I will probably have to stay up way later than I should to download it. Darn you satellite Internet.

This one might be a keeper if for no other reason than the Princess Bride storyline. I really love that movie.

Peggle Nights Release Date!

Peggle Nights now has an official release date! Good news is that it will be this summer. The bad news is that it’s at the very end of summer.

Peggle Nights will be September 16h, 2008. In the meantime, Popcap plans to have some fun events to for us anxious Peggle fans. There will be contests to win Peggle prizes and to learn more about the new game.

This is very good news for Peggle fans. I guess we’ll have to wait for more details but it should be fun!

The Race

One of my favorite TV shows is The Amazing Race, so when I saw The Race on Big Fish Games, I knew I wanted to give it a try.

The Race is a hidden object game where you travel the globe in search of everything from butterflies to frying pans to golf clubs. Leave no stone unturned as you race against other teams to find the list of objects and advance in the game.

As far as hidden objects games go, there might be better ones out there but The Race does have something to offer causal gamers especially those who are fans of reality TV. You can track you opponent’s progress and there is even a tool that will set back the closest team.

The Race is fun but it is strictly hidden object boards. There doesn’t seem to be any mini-games, which kind of make me sad as the whole race theme could lend itself to some fun ideas.

Dash Pass

As you might now, I’m crazying about Diner Dash. I just love this game and it’s spin-offs like Wedding Dash. So, I’m wanting to give Cooking Dash a try, too.

Since I enjoy all these games, I’m tempted to join the Dash Pass at PlayFirst. It’s like a passport in that you will have get five new Dash games for 50 dollars. That’s half the cost of all five, so it’s not a bad deal.

You get Wedding Dash 2, Fashion Dash, Cooking Dash, and the next two Dash games. It’s something to think about definitely as I know I would enjoy all those games.

The Dash series is quite fun to me and is one of the few casual games I’ve completed. It’s worth checking out and half off the price of five games is a great way to add some casual games to the PC.

Peggle Nights?

So, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Peggle Nights. It was announced earlier this year that it would be released in late July. I know that games are ready when they are ready and that release dates get pushed back. I’m just ready to play it.

I’m sure it will be released soon or at least I hope so.

Fitness Frenzy is another one of those time management games but with a fitness theme. It might not be much of a physical workout, so don’t worry about sweating out toxins and needing the acne cream. Instead you will take on the role of Vicki, a personal trainer who must help her clients get into the best shape of their lives.
