Purple Party

Way Off Topic 1 Comment »

September has been designated as the month to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. In fact, September 21st is officially World Alzheimer’s Day. The Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise $1 million this month for Alzheimer research and has some interesting ways that people can help with that goal.

During the month of September, you can hold a Purple Party that will help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s. As with all parties, you must decide your guest list, budget, and what type of party to host. You can set a donation goal for your party, too. Plenty of planning advice and other helpful party planning tips are available at the ActionALZ website. If you raise $150, then you get a free party kit.

All the money raised during the month of September by the Alzheimer’s Association will be matched by Harrah’s Foundation. Just think whatever money your purple party raises will be matched dollar-for-dollar by sponsor Harrah’s. That will make all the work for hosting a party well worth it to know that your effors will bring in a lot of money for Alzheimer’s research.

My grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s, and it was very hard to watch her memory fade over the years. Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease that hopefully will one day have a cure. Awareness is so important and that’s why I’m happy to learn about World Alzheimer’s Day. It’s also great to know that all the money raised this month through Purple Parties and other sources will be doubled thanks to the Harrah’s Foundation.

Saturday Gaming

Game Talk 1 Comment »

It is taking us way too long to do small repairs today that we will probably miss our RPG game tonight. So, now it’s Saturday night and we’re wondering what to do.

Since we’ve been offline for practically the whole month, I’m thinking it is a great time to catch up on playing some of the cool casual games that have been released. I do have a Big Fish game credit and would love to find another multiplayer game for us to give a spin tonight.

I haven’t unpacked the PS2 yet, so it looks like Guitar Hero is out of the question for now. In fact, I’m not really sure which box the PS2 is in. I have already unpacked both guitars, games, and the controller.

So between a new casual game and finding the PS2, we might just have a full evening without leaving home.

Learning to Dance

Fitness Revolution 1 Comment »

Dance will be a key element in my fitness revolution since I will be dancing away to Dance Dance Revolution quite a bit. I would also like to add more dances to my fitness plan. Dancing is a great way to lose some weight as we’ve seen on Dancing with the Stars. John O’Hurley lost 20 pounds during his season on the show. That’s enough incentive for me to learn ballroom dance right there.

I’ve attended a few ballroom dance classes but everything happens so fast that it’s hard to get that personal attention. Around here there is only group classes, so individual lessons just aren’t available to take. Dancecrazy.com offers instructional videos to teach you dance. You can learn ballroom dancing or even line dancing. The best thing with videos is that you can pause and rewind to watch that footwork once or ten more times without holding up the progress of the class.

Dance Crazy does offer a unique way to learn dance in the privacy of your home. That means no more trips out of town to learn dance. I feel dance will be an important element in my weightloss goals and becoming overall more healthy. Besides dancing is just fun to do, and it will be great to learn to properly dance from the privacy of my own home. That way when I fall over my own feet I’m the only one laughing about it.

Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

Card Games No Comments »

I saw the card game for Are you smarter than a 5th grader? in the store yesterday. The game lets you test yourself at home if you are indeed smarter than a 5th grader. It comes with so many questions that a fifth grader should know.

Some questions are really hard since it deals with subjects or ideas that you may have learned in school but haven’t had a reason to recall in quite sometime. I like the game as it is fun to watch and the kids are really cute on the TV show. I’m not sure I want to be tested because I have a feeling that I am not smarter than a 5th grader. Still, it looks like a cute card game that comes in its own carrying case much like the Deal or No Deal card game. Too bad the card game doesn’t come with a Jeff Foxworthy cutout and a recording of his voice to ask the questions. I’m not sure playing the game would be the same as watching it on TV without him. It could be fun especially for those who love hard or obscure trivia.
