Thoof - What’s in a Name?
Way Off Topic August 9th, 2007Thoof is fast becoming one of my favorite websites for finding stories I am interested in on the web. It’s live Tivo for the Internet since Thoof examines past stories of interest to you and makes a determination of stories that you might find interesting. It’s nice to get personalized news that is just for me and centers around my interests.
But just what does Thoof mean? Thoof makes me think of the sound that happens when someone rolls off the bed. I’ve made this sound and have heard it on a couple of different occasions. The baby rolled off the bed a few nights ago. That was a rude awakening. A funnier time was when we were on our honeymoon and my husband dives onto the firm hotel bed and then bounces right off onto the floor.
Why name a website Thoof? I think rolling off the bed is such a common experience that we all can relate to it so why not name a social website it? It’s obvious that the folks behind Thoof were looking for a name that would stand out and have people guessing what the meaning is behind it all.
Thoof also reminds me of sleuth, which would make sense for a website that features nice finds on the web. Sleuth was probably taken, so go with the next best thing, Thoof.
Whatever their reasoning behind their name choice, I really like their service. And because of the unique name, it’s not likely I’ll forget Thoof anytime soon.
