Virtual FX 2D to 3D Converter Review
Reviews September 20th, 2006I’ve had some time to work on my gaming/toy room. This room was our bedroom but will soon be our mecca for gaming and the baby’s playroom. A nice addition to the game room is
Edmund Scientifics’s Virtual FX 2D to 3D converter. This plug and play unit converts 2D images into real 3D. It ships with two 3D glasses, a remote control, the converter box, a 3D DVD, and two RCA connector cables. You can use the RCA cables to connect your TV to the converter or use an S-video cable.
Setting up the converter was straightforward and simple. I got it right on my first attempt and didn’t have to ask for assistance from my husband. You do not have to stand so close to the converter for it to work. The glass pick up an Infrared signal from the converter box, so you do have to have a line of sight to it. If you lose signal, just readjust your position, and the glasses will pick it up again. You will know you have it set up correctly because the TV screen flickers. Here is a short video to show you how your television will look with the signal running through the 3D converter.
While watching videos in 3D is entertaining, Virtual FX’s capability to convert video games really intrigued me. I used one of my Sega Dreamcast games, Illbleed, to test it out. Illbleed is the game featured in the video. I must say I was impressed with the 3D imaging with the video game. It took a while for me to adjust to the screen split for the video game setting.
Before using your Virtual FX 2D to 3D converter, read all of the instructions and give yourself a learning curve to get use to watching the images. The converter is a nice addition to our gaming room. The video games seem to do better displaying the 3D imaging than regular television. Ofcourse, the 3D DVD is beautiful and really shows off the capabilities of the device. My opinion is that video games like Illbleed that are a third person viewpoint where you play the game looking at your character’s back will work best.
There are also 3D DVDs you can buy at Edmund Scientifics. Take a look at Encounter in the 3rd Dimension starring Mistress of the Dark Elvira.
Next on the list for the gaming room is this Boom Chair from Edmund Scientifics. I really need a chair as you can see from in the picture.

The FX Converter for the DVDs is spectacular. For the video games it’s OK. The 3D effect is flat like the Magic Eye pictures. It’s a nice toy and if expecations aren’t that high then it’s worth the money. It didn’t really add that much for me playing video games but just watching their DVDs it’s a fun experience.

This system is highly effective for CRT Television’s and I can imagin what it would be like for a Projection. I have tryed it on a newer Philips LCD “2007″ and it will not work. Please read my entire post so I can tell you how real this 3D is. It’s realy GOOD! Revive and stir new imagination with your old Television! Thats the idea.
Follow the instructions, make sure the Television is at it’s highest brightness, and that the stereo scopic system is adjusted for the proper eye phase. For 3D effects that jump out of the screen make sure you sit as close to the television as you can to view them perfectly hiting your face. Reccommended first time and all time 3D DVD’s is the Encounters of the third dimension “has the stuff that comes to your face” and Apartment 51 for the clear and understandable 3D that is long lasting and will show Depth from the Television and not so much panning and stuff flying out of the screen. I liked both of these DVD’s. I have had the Alien Adventures and only noticed about 4 things that had things coming at your face but the rest is a basic simulator with good shadows. I have IMAX DVD’s and even though they are 3D in the Theater they are not IMAX 3D DVD’s. One dvd says to goto IMAX theater to see the film in IMAX 3D. So stick to the tryed and proven 3D films to start your great collection. Ounce again, the Encounters of the third dimension felt like things where touching my eye. It’s that real. (Virtual FX 3D with True 3D Movies, $100) Terminator 2’s T-1000 with a liquid sword pocking your eye. That’s what you can expect with the Encounters of the Third Dimension DVD and Virtual FX.

I love anything vintage, especially old toys and cars.

You should try Imax Haunted castle its even better in 3D compared to encounters of the third demension. Unfortunately the system doesnt work on plasme or LCD TV’s. An ad on is required called 3D Dual Processor. In the future you might need it since CRT TV’s are getting hard to get in Holland, where I live. I’m pretty satisfied about the device. like using the system on the movies JAWS 3 and friday the 13th part3 which were originaly presented in 3D. Unfortunatly there are just 2 field sequential IMAX (PAL)DVD’s available in Holland. The rest of IMAX DVD’s are NTSC which wont work properly on our PAL system.
